At Events

You’re the Thrown Weapons Marshal in Charge for an East Kingdom event.

1.   Have you familiarized yourself with the revised youth (Under-Age) thrower policies in the current EK TW Policies handbook?

Yes – continue.      No – now is the time.

2.   Have you checked with the event steward about whether there are any site restrictions limiting you from implementing the thrown weapons youth sign-in option or are there other reasons which would do so?

If there are – coordinate with the event steward to post on the EK Calendar event announcement that the youth sign-in option will not be available for the event.

If there aren’t – continue.

Prior to the Event:

  1. Do you have sufficient blank copies of the forms:

You’re going to need some.

  • Do you have copies of the Range Procedures and Range Etiquette? You should already have those for display at the range (as required)…
  • Do you plan to hand out stickers/tokens for registered youth throwers so you and the other marshals at the range know who’s signed-in and who isn’t? If yes, get those.

At the Event:

Case I: A parent/legal guardian wishes to sign-in their youth (age 12-17) for the day.

  1. Confirm that the youth is 12 or older. If they aren’t, explain that the youth may not throw without the parent/legal guardian present.
  2. Confirm that the parent has signed the youth in at Gate or can show a current SCA blue card for the youth thrower. Provide a blank copy of the SCA Minor’s Consent to Participate and Hold Harmless Agreement (waiver) if needed (but this should have been completed at Gate unless the youth has a current SCA blue card).
  3. Confirm that both the parent/legal guardian and the youth are familiar with the Range Etiquette and Range Procedures.
  4. Confirm that the parent/legal guardian will be remaining on site.
  5. Have the parent/legal guardian fill out the EK TW Youth Thrower Event Registration Form.

A “no” to any of these items means that the youth may not throw without the parent/legal guardian present.

Case II: A designated “responsible adult” (RA) accompanies a youth thrower (age 12-17) to the range.

  1. Confirm that the youth is 12 or older. If they aren’t, explain that the youth may not throw without the parent/legal guardian present. The RA cannot do this.
  2. Have the RA show an SCA Medical Authorization for Minors form completed by the youth’s parent/legal guardian. If they cannot and if the parent/legal guardian can reached, provide them with a blank copy, have it completed.
  3. Confirm that the parent/legal guardian/RA has signed the youth in at Gate or can show a current SCA blue card for the youth thrower. Provide a blank copy of the SCA Minor’s Consent to Participate and Hold Harmless Agreement (waiver) if needed (but this should have been completed at Gate unless the youth has a current SCA blue card). This should be filled out by the parent/legal guardian if they’re available.
  4. Confirm that both the RA and the youth are familiar with the Range Etiquette and Range Procedures.
  5. Confirm that the RA or a parent/legal guardian will be remaining on site.
  6. Have the RA fill out the EK TW Youth Thrower Event Registration Form.

A “no” to any of these items means that the youth may not throw without the parent/legal guardian present. The RA is not a sufficient substitute.

Retain the completed EK TW Youth Thrower Event Registration Forms after the event and send them to your Regional Marshal.

At Practices

You’re the Thrown Weapons Marshal in Charge for an East Kingdom open TW practice.

Case I: A parent/legal guardian accompanies their own child or youth thrower (age 5-17) to the range:

  1. Confirm that the child/youth has a current SCA blue card, or have an SCA Minor’s Consent to Participate and Hold Harmless Agreement (waiver) completed by the parent/legal guardian. This must be done for each practice.
  2. Confirm that the parent/legal guardian will be remaining at practice with the child/youth.

A “no” to any of these items means the child/youth may not throw at the practice. If the child thrower is under age 12, when the parent/legal guardian leaves the practice the child must also leave. For a youth thrower (age 12-17) the parent/legal guardian may designate a “responsible adult” who will remain at the practice with the youth (see Case II).

Case II: A designated “responsible adult” (RA) accompanies a youth thrower (age 12-17) to the range:

  1. Confirm that the youth is 12 or older. If they aren’t, explain that the youth may not throw without the parent/legal guardian present. The RA cannot do this.
  2. Confirm that the parent/legal guardian has previously attended a thrown weapons practice and has reviewed the Range Etiquette and Range Procedures.
  3. Have the RA show an SCA Medical Authorization for Minors form completed by the parent/legal guardian. This must be done for each practice.
  4. Confirm that the youth has a current SCA blue card, or have the RA show an SCA Minor’s Consent to Participate and Hold Harmless Agreement (waiver) completed by the parent/legal guardian. This must be done for each practice.
  5. Confirm that the RA will be remaining at practice with the youth.

A “no” to any of these items means the youth may not throw at the practice. If the RA leaves the practice, the youth must also leave.
