The East Kingdom Thrown Weapons Royal Round incorporates and aligns with the Standard TW Royal Round. All equipment and throwing line rules of the SCA and the East Kingdom apply. (effective 1 April 2022)
General Rules
- The target shall be a 3-inch circle centered inside a 8-inch circle centered inside a 14-inch circle. The center of the scoring circles shall be not less than 40 inches from the ground nor more than 60 inches from the ground. The scoring is: Center=5, Middle=3, and Outside=1.
- The Royal Round must take place at an event listed in the official calendar of the kingdom wherein the event takes place, or a practice scheduled and published at least three days in advance in the local branch newsletter, web site, or official branch email list, for it to count. For events and practices outside the East Kingdom, only Standard TW Royal Round scores will be accepted.
- All scores must be witnessed by a thrown weapons marshal and one other person.
- A Royal Round consists of 10 throws using a single weapons form. A thrower need not throw all 10 throws for the Royal Round to be valid.
- Only one score for each thrower for each weapons form may be submitted each day of the event/practice, but there is no limit to the number of Royal Rounds that may be thrown.
- A thrower may pause at any time during a Royal Round, but must finish the round in the same practice/meeting/day of an event.
- For a weapon to score, it must be sticking in the target. If it falls out of the target before it is scored, it shall count as a miss. (There is a special case for spears; see Weapons Standards below.)
- The thrower has the option to ask the marshal of the line to score a throw and retrieve at any time.
- Provided the thrower’s heel is behind the line, their front foot may be on the line, as long as their point of balance is at or behind the line. This includes the 10-foot line. The thrower must not step forward (not lifting their heel) with their front foot if that foot is on the line.
- Accessibility accommodations for throwers that need them may be made at the marshal’s discretion.
- If a weapon is cutting a line between two values, count the higher value.
- After a thrower begins a Royal Round, they must complete that round of that weapons form before beginning a new round. A new round for a weapons form may not be started until the previous round for that weapons form has been completed or abandoned. The thrower may begin a Royal Round for another weapons form (i.e., they may throw different weapons forms all from one distance and then move to another distance). The thrower may practice before beginning a Royal Round, but must declare when they are beginning.
- During a Royal Round, when a section is completed and the thrower changes distance, the thrower is allowed not more than two unscored “calibration rounds” (of only the weapons being thrown for scoring, without retrieval, in each “calibration round”) from the new distance, then must complete and score that section.
- At the marshal’s discretion, if the thrower is combining a Royal Round with a TWIC (or any other system), throwing any other alternate distance between close and far distance is allowed. They may throw these in any order, but must ensure that they follow the standards of the competition(s) they are competing in. When combining a Royal Round with any other scoring or competition round, separate scoresheets must be prepared so the RR is submitted without extraneous data.
Weapons Standards
1. Axes: May only have a single, marked scoring edge. If a blade edge (point to point around the edge), is more than 5 inches, then 5 inches must be marked as the scoring area. Any throwing axe used must not be prohibited for thrown weapons use in the Kingdom where it is being used.
2. Knives: May be single- or double-edged or be simply pointed with no “edge” (spikes), but may only have one scoring end. There are no maximum or minimum sizes on throwing knives, but any throwing knife used must not be prohibited for thrown weapons use in the Kingdom where it is being used. Provided the tip of the knife is in the target, any part of the blade that crosses a scoring zone counts.
3. Spears: Are limited to a single sticking point for purposes of scoring. Spear tips must be less than 3 inches wide at the widest point of the spear tip. The minimum length for any spear is 3 feet long, and the maximum length is 8 feet long, but any throwing spear used must not be prohibited for thrown weapons use in the Kingdom where it is being used. Provided the tip of the spear is in the target, any part of the blade that crosses a scoring zone counts. To score, the tip must be embedded in the target, even if the butt/haft is resting on the ground.
Scoring
1. Axe: An axe RR consists of two rounds of 5 throws each. One round of throws will be from no less than 10 feet, and one round of throws from no less than 20 feet, for a total of 10 throws.
2. Knife: A knife RR consists of two rounds of 5 throws each. One round of throws will be from no less than 10 feet, and one round of throws from no less than 20 feet, for a total of 10 throws.
3. Spear: A spear RR consists of two rounds of 5 throws each. One round will be thrown from no less than 15 feet and one round of throws from no less than 25 feet, for a total of 10 throws. (Note that a hard target for spears is acceptable but EKTW rules require the thrower to be at least 20 feet from a hard target.)
Scores: Submit scores to the EKTW Scorekeeper at thrownweapons_scorekeeper@eastkingdom.org by the last day of the month. For each thrower, include the following information:
– SCA Name
– Local Barony/Shire
– Date Thrown
– Weapon form
– Scores at each distance
The top three submitted Royal Round scores within the previous 24 months will be averaged together to establish position in the rankings. When a submitted Royal Round score is more than two years old, it will be dropped and the highest more-recent score on record will be used to make a new average. When a newly-submitted Royal Round score is not higher than the three currently used for the thrower’s average, the average is not recalculated. Scores will be published records for two years from the date the Royal Round was thrown.
Rankings and their required averages are:
– Novice Thrower:
– Thrower:
– Expert Thrower:
– Master Thrower:
– Grand Master Thrower:
Rankings are maintained as long as the thrower’s current scores achieve the requisite average; except for Grand Master Thrower, which may be permanently retained once achieved.
